Clinical Practice with Military Personnel and Veterans

This course critically examines social work practice with military personnel and veterans in various military, veteran, and community settings. Using a multidisciplinary perspective, the course provides an overview of military organizations, work and life experiences of military personnel and their families in these organizations, and the military deployment cycle. Students learn how social, political, and contextual factors influence mental health, psychosocial, and behavioral outcomes and treatment seeking among military personnel and veterans. Students acquire clinical skills for assessing and working with this population in individual, group, and family settings. Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs policies that impact services to military personnel and veterans are also examined.
