Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

The School of Management introduced a substantial revision to its curriculum in the 2013-14 academic year. Students who entered the School prior to Fall 2013 should see below for the policies pertaining to them.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) requires that students complete coursework in both management the liberal arts, and that they complete no fewer than 129 credits, plus additional one-credit seminars in career development. Students normally take four academic courses each semester. These courses are distributed as follows:

  • 16 required courses in the School of Management
  • Four management electives
  • Four required liberal arts courses
  • Seven Liberal Arts Distribution Requirements and Liberal Arts Electives (described in the Electives section of this Bulletin)
  • One Non-Management Elective (described in the Electives section of this Bulletin)
  • In most cases, two Free Electives to ensure the minimum 129 credits necessary to graduate
  • Plus one-credit career development seminars. Students who begin as freshmen in the School of Management take SMG SM108 in their freshman year, followed by SM208 (concurrently with OB221), SM308 (concurrently with the Cross-Functional Core), and SM408 in their senior year.  Students who transfer into SMG replace SM108 and SM208 with SM209, which combines the content of SM108 and SM208.  These credits are not included in the 129 credits necessary to graduate.

Freshman Year

Students in their freshman year take three required management courses: Business, Society & Ethics, Introduction to Finance, and Creating Value in the Global Economy. The intent of the three courses is to provide a philosophical, economic, and applied foundation for ethical decision-making in finance and business. Concurrently, the courses are designed to launch the development of the student’s writing, presentation, and team skills

  • Please note: All SMG students who enter as freshmen in September must complete SMG SM 131 and SMG FE 101 with a grade of no lower than B- to remain in good standing. Non-SMG students must have completed at least one semester of matriculated college coursework to enroll in SMG FE 101 or SM 131.
  • SMG SM 151 Creating Value in the Global Economy (2 cr)
  • SMG SM 108 Career Management Seminar 1 (1 cr)
  • Two liberal arts electives (8 cr total)

Sophomore Year

Students in their sophomore year develop the analytical tools of financial and managerial accounting, management information systems, and statistics, study organizational behavior, and learn the institutional realities of business law. Informed by their freshman experience, students more readily comprehend the importance of these analytical tools, see the need to extend their team skills, and recognize the practical importance of the institutional perspective of business law.

Junior Year

Juniors at SMG devote an entire semester to SM 323: The Cross-Functional Core. This unit is the cornerstone of the school’s philosophy of teaching management as a system. It combines three functional courses (on finance, marketing, and operations and technology management) with a further extension of our students’ quantitative skills (business analytics) into a coherent unit that stresses the interrelationships among them. An integral part of the unit is a team project to develop a full business plan for the introduction of a new product.

During the senior year, students take the final core management requirement—a course in strategy and policy—and management electives. To graduate, students must take their remaining management electives, along with any remaining non-management electives.

Students who entered SMG Sept. 2011–Jan. 2013

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) requires that students complete coursework in both the liberal arts and management, and that they complete no fewer than 136.5 academic credits (if they begin as freshmen in the School of Management and complete SMG SM 121 and SM 122) or 134.5 credits (if they transfer into the School of Management and complete SMG SM 299).   • Four management electives
  • Five required liberal arts courses
  • Seven Level A and Level B liberal arts electives (described in the Required Non-Management Courses Electives section of this Bulletin)

Student who entered SMG prior to Sept. 2011

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program consists of 33 courses in both the liberal arts and management. Students normally take four academic courses each semester. These courses are distributed as follows:

  • 14 required courses in the School of Management
  • Four management electives
  • Five required liberal arts courses
  • Seven Level A and Level B liberal arts electives (described in the Electives section of this Bulletin)
  • Two non-management Level C electives (described in the Electives section of this Bulletin)

Concentrations

Undergraduate students may choose to concentrate in any one of 10 managerial disciplines or functions. To do so, however, the student must meet the stated guidelines for the selected area.

Concentration requirements are in addition to the courses required as part of the basic program of study. Students use their four management electives to fulfill the concentration requirements. Students may also use their free electives to fulfill concentration requirements. Any course taken for a concentration must have the SMG prefix. See concentration sections below for those concentrations also having CAS requirements.

Accounting

Sixteen credits in total are required. All courses are four credits except as noted.

AC Required Courses

All Accounting concentrators must take the following:

General Management

Four courses in total are required.
Based on career or graduate school plans, or to develop a broad, generalized program students may prefer to take courses in an area in which no concentration is offered. In these instances, students may choose a General Management concentration.

Any four SMG elective courses can be used to fulfill the requirements for this option. Students who concentrate in General Management cannot double concentrate.

International Management

Five to nine courses in total are required, depending on the foreign language requirement.

IM Required Courses

All International Management concentrators must take the following two courses:

  • SMG FE 427 International Financial Management
  • SMG IM 345 International Management Environment (also offered in London)

IM “B” List

One course from the following list is required as well as one additional course as explained at the end of this section:

  • SMG IM 445 International Management Policy
  • SMG MK 467 International Marketing Management
  • SMG OB 444 Managing in a Global Environment
  • SMG OM 467 Global Supply Management
  • SMG SI 471 International Entrepreneurship

Students concentrating in International Management must:

  1. Complete a language other than English through the fourth-semester level
    OR
  2. Obtain a certificate of proficiency in a foreign language from CAS
    OR
  3. Earn a score of 560 or above on an SAT II foreign language exam as described in the foreign language section of the bulletin

All International Management concentrators must also complete one CAS International Relations course.
All International Management concentrators must complete a study abroad program sponsored by Boston University Study Abroad or a non-BU study abroad program of no less than 6 to 8 credits approved by the SMG Undergraduate Program Office and the BU Study Abroad. Please note that only students considered to be international according to university regulations may fulfill this requirement through participation in Boston University’s programs in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Students completing the International Management concentration are required to take one additional SMG elective in order to satisfy their fourth SMG elective requirement. This elective may be taken in any SMG department.

Law

Four courses in total are required.

LA “A” List

Three courses are required from the following list:

Law concentrators are required to take one additional 300-level or higher SMG elective. Concentrators should choose this fourth elective after consulting with a member of the law faculty. It is strongly recommended but not required that this fourth elective be a non-law course.

Management Information Systems

Five courses in total are required.
One of the following CAS programming courses is required:

  • CAS CS 108 Introduction to Application Programming
  • CAS CS 111 Introduction to Computer Science I

MIS Required Courses

All Management Information Systems concentrators must take the following:

  • SMG IS 465 Managing Data Resources

MIS “B” List

The applications knowledge requirement can be fulfilled by taking one of the following management information systems applications courses:

  • SMG IS 479 Innovating with Information Technology (offered only during the summer)
  • SMG IS 498 An approved 4-credit directed study with an IS faculty member

Students pursuing the MIS concentration as part of a double-concentration with Accounting, Finance, Marketing, or Operations & Technology Management may use a course from their second concentration to fulfill their MIS B-list requirement.
