The Wheelock College of Education & Human Development sponsors 10 minors for students enrolled in any school or college within Boston University. Minors are offered in Applied Human DevelopmentAutism Spectrum Disorders, Deaf Education, Deaf Studies, Emotional & Behavioral Challenges in Schools, English Education, Education, Mathematics EducationSpecial Education, and Teaching Science Education. Note: Wheelock minors do not meet the requirements for teacher licensure, although some coursework may be applied to courses of study leading to licensure.

Students intending to declare a minor must complete a Minor Declaration form in the records/advising offices of their home school.

Education Minor

The Education minor is offered to undergraduate students at Boston University wishing to enhance their knowledge of education. Requirements include 16 credits of core courses and 8 credits of electives. A grade of C or higher must be attained in all classes applied toward the minor. Only two classes can be counted toward a major and a minor. No more than two classes may be taken at an external institution and applied to a Wheelock minor.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the Minor in Education, students will be able to:

  • Critically describe the field of education and the many career paths the field offers.
  • Design, develop, and implement practices that demonstrate a beginning understanding of the required skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to work with students of different ages, areas of interest, and levels of ability, while partnering with their families and communities.
  • Explain and apply principles of anti-oppressive practice when designing and implementing educational practices for diverse groups of students in different settings.

  • WED ED 200 Introduction to Justice-Based Education (4 cr)
  • WED ED 206 Family and Community Engagement (4 cr)
  • WED SE 250 Disability, Education, and Public Policy (4 cr)

Elective Courses (8 cr)

  • WED ED 213 Approaches to Learning (4 cr)
  • WED ED 350 Sense-Making in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (4 cr)
  • WED ED 507 Global Citizenship Education (4 cr)
  • WED EN 512 Methods of Teaching Writing in Secondary English Language Arts (4 cr)
  • Other WED course selected with and approved by the Education minor advisor and the student advisor.
