BS in English Education

The English & Language Arts Program prepares teachers, curriculum specialists, teacher educators, and researchers for careers in K–12 English/language arts. This program focuses on research findings in the teaching of literature and language; the improvement of instructional methodology, materials and curriculum; and service to schools and children.

The undergraduate English Education Program is designed to prepare teachers of English (5–8 and 8–12) and those planning careers in related fields such as publishing, curriculum development, and educational research. Students develop competency in instructional strategies, as well as in methods which are specific to adolescents and pre-adolescents, the educational environment, and the subject matter. In addition to courses in the Department of English, students complete SED ED 100 Introduction to Education; SED ED 410 Social Context of Education and SED ED 412 Civic Context of Education; SED CT 575 General Methods (5–12); SED EN 506 Curriculum Materials and Teaching Strategies in Secondary English; SED SE 251 Special Education and Adolescents; SED DS 502 Introduction to Adolescent Development; LR 732 Teaching English in Middle and Secondary Schools; and Student Teaching in an English/language arts classroom.
