CAGS in Counseling

Changes to this program will take effect in the 2016–2017 academic year.

Boston University’s Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) program in Counseling is designed for practicing professionals—in appropriate education, human development, or mental health positions—who wish to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Our CAGS in school adjustment and child and adolescent mental health counseling is open to those who have completed a degree in counseling or a related field and wish to re-specialize in a different area within counseling. Our CAGS with a specialization in Sport Psychology is open to those who have completed a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or the sport sciences.

The CAGS program offers an individualized program of study developed on a contract basis between the student and academic advisor. Coursework and a comprehensive treatise are required; a supervised clinical practicum may be elected and is required for those seeking school adjustment or mental health counseling licensure. Students satisfying all degree and specific licensure requirements will be assisted in applying for their state and/or national licenses. Additional courses and clinical practicum hours are required for those pursuing the school adjustment counseling license and preparing to become Licensed Mental Health Counselors.
