EdM in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

PreK–6/5–12 (Licensure)

Changes to this program will take effect in the 2023–2024 academic year.

Licensure Track

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Licensure Track) Program offers two options to support the preparation of individuals to teach English as a second language (ESL) in US public schools. The first prepares students to become licensed to teach designated English learners in preK–6 ESL classrooms, and the second prepares students to become licensed to teach designated English learners in middle/high school classrooms (5–12).

The program of study includes coursework in linguistics, language acquisition, assessment of oral language and literacy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, curriculum development, and policy issues that influence assessment and instruction of designated English learners in US public schools.

Students complete a student-teaching pre-practicum in the fall semester in a public school classroom and a full-time practicum in the spring semester. Interested candidates who already possess an initial teaching license in another field and who would like to earn the master’s degree and licensure as a teacher of English as a second language also are encouraged to apply and meet with the program director to plan a program of study.
