Residents must initiate and complete a research project using the elements of scientific method, including research design, accurate reporting, critical thinking, and the formulation of conclusions based upon scientific data rather than opinion. Affiliation with hospitals, medical institutions and other health-oriented organizations is encouraged to foster collaborative research. An in-depth didactic course on research methodology in the first semester will provide residents with a basic knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts in research methodology and their applications in clinical pediatric dental research. The course will review concepts in epidemiology and biostatistics emphasizing on their applications in oral health research which will enable residents to effectively conduct and interpret scientific research. This course will also introduce data management and data analysis using statistical software. During the course students will explore ideas for their research project and initiate data collection for their research. 1st -- 2nd sem.
