School of Theology
The School of Theology at Boston University is the oldest Methodist theological seminary in North America, and the founding School of our University. With guidance from our ecumenical faculty, students explore programs in comparative theology, world Christianity and missions, and evangelism encompassing the full theological spectrum of Christian engagement with the world. As seminarians, students also benefit from our participation in the Boston Theological Institute by registering for classes, using the libraries, or attending special lectures or workshops for classes at any of the nine theological schools in the consortium.

- Prominent graduates include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Howard Thurman, Samuel Proctor, Edward Wimberly, and the first female graduate, Anna Howard Shaw.
- Students may become ordained deacons in the United Methodist Church.
- Dual degree programs include the MDiv/MSW (Master of Social Work), MTS/MSW, and MDiv/MSM.
- The Online Certificate in Asian Religions & Healing offers four online courses that students can take as a stand-alone non-degree program or integrated within the STM or MTS degrees.
- The Master of Sacred Music program is a collaboration between the Schools of Theology and Music.
- The Hymn Society in the United States & Canada, North America's only organization devoted solely to the development and promotion of congregational song, resides at Boston University.
