Boston University Academy
Boston University Academy is a small, independent, coeducational high school for students with genuine intellectual curiosity, strong academic abilities, and a diversity of interests. Located on the BU campus, the Academy provides an education program marked by a traditional, classically based core curriculum. In the freshman and sophomore years, students follow a liberal arts course of study that includes English, history, mathematics, science, ancient Greek or Latin, visual and performing arts, and physical education. In the junior year, students begin Boston University coursework with Biology and the option to choose a foreign language. In the senior year, students have the opportunity to take four courses each semester at the University, allowing them to graduate with up to forty-eight college credits, a portion of which may be transferred at the discretion of the college to which they matriculate. Prior to graduation, all Academy students must complete an independently researched senior thesis as well as 20 hours of community service each year. The mission of BU Academy is not to accelerate learning or adolescence, but rather to expand the high school intellectual experience for highly motivated and capable students.
Features:
- The opportunity to write a senior thesis, which is designed to allow each student to demonstrate the skills necessary to think, analyze, and write in a coherent and mature way. Through the senior thesis project, students follow an intellectual passion in depth with the guidance of a university professor. Thesis topics include research in history and politics; literature and music; linguistics and science. All seniors complete the thesis project as a requirement for graduation.
- The chance to explore outside interests through participation in numerous co-curricular activities. Student organizations include: A Cappella Group, Academy Press, Art Club, Choral Ensemble, Junior Classical League, Literary Magazine, Model UN, Robotics and Science Teams, Student Council, and Yearbook. All students are encouraged, though not required to participate in an after-school sport.
- College counseling designed to help students make informed choices regarding their college applications. Two counselors assist students in matching their talents and interests with appropriate institutions of higher learning.
