Transfer of Credits

Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Policy

Master’s Degree Program

Graduate-level courses in other accredited graduate schools or in other schools or colleges of Boston University not used toward the awarding of any other degree may be transferred on recommendation of the major advisor and the chair or program director with the approval of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

Credit for work to be taken concurrently with studies in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences must be approved before registration for such courses; all such courses must have been taken for a letter grade (not Pass/Fail). No transfer of credit for courses taken before the senior year of college or from correspondence or distance learning will be accepted. Petitions for credits for transfer are available on the GRS website.

A maximum of 8 credits may be transferred from other universities unless a department requires more than 32 credits. For programs requiring more than 32 credits, a student may transfer additional credits up to the number required in excess of 32.

PhD Degree Program

Graduate-level courses in other accredited graduate schools or in other schools or colleges of Boston University may be transferred on recommendation of the major advisor and the chair or program director with the approval of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

Programs may approve the transfer of credit for appropriate graduate coursework taken prior to matriculating into GRS provided that the graduate credits were not used to satisfy the requirements of an undergraduate degree at Boston University or elsewhere. No student may transfer more than 32 credits. Programs may set a lower maximum number of credits that may be transferred.

To complete a master’s degree while pursuing a PhD, a student must have competed 32 credits of graduate coursework, at least 24 of which must have been completed at Boston University (i.e., a maximum of 8 credits). Programs may set a higher minimum number of credits to complete a master’s degree. Students may not use credits or other work used to satisfy the requirements of a master’s degree earned at another institution to fulfill the requirements of a master’s degree in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

To complete a PhD degree, a student must complete at least 64 credits of graduate coursework. If the student receives both a master’s and PhD degree as part of the same program, at least 48 of these credits must be completed at Boston University (i.e., a maximum of 16 credits). If the student receives only a PhD, at least 32 of these credits must be completed at Boston University (i.e., a maximum of 32). In either case, programs may set a higher minimum number of credits that must be completed at Boston University.
