Transfer Credit

College of Engineering Policy

It is generally expected that undergraduate students in the College of Engineering will complete their degree requirements at Boston University. During the academic year (Fall and Spring Semesters), courses will not be considered for transfer from another institution in the Boston area when the equivalent course is offered at Boston University.

Boston University students cannot satisfy program requirements through the transfer of credit earned during the summer at other institutions located within the greater Boston area, unless the credit involved is for a required course not offered through Boston University’s Summer Term, and prior approval has been obtained from both the responsible department and dean of the requesting student. “Greater Boston area” is defined as that region inside of Route 128.

Transfer and Freshman Admissions

Incoming freshmen have their previous credits and coursework evaluated by the Undergraduate Records Office in conjunction with the appropriate academic departments. Incoming transfer students have their previous credits and coursework evaluated by the University Registrar in conjunction with the appropriate academic departments. Transfer students submit all credentials upon application to the University to credeval@bu.edu.

The College of Engineering does not grant transfer credit for courses in which the student has received grades lower than C or for courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis. All Engineering (ENG) upper-division transfer courses must be from an ABET-accredited program. Students wishing to transfer an ENG course from a non-ABET-accredited program may be required to provide additional documentation to determine course equivalence. Students who have questions concerning transfer credit evaluations should contact the Undergraduate Records Office. All transfer credit and AP issues must be resolved within six months of matriculation in the College of Engineering.

Transfer Credit for Continuing Students

With prior approval, students may take courses at another college or university for credit toward their degree program. To ensure that credit for a course taken at another institution will transfer to Boston University and will satisfy the student’s degree requirements, the student should complete a transfer credit approval form before taking the class. The transfer credit approval form must be accompanied by a course syllabus from the other institution. A separate approval form must be submitted for each course for which the student is requesting transfer credit. All Engineering (ENG) upper-division transfer courses must be from an ABET-accredited program. Students wishing to transfer an ENG course from a non-ABET-accredited program may be required to provide additional documentation to determine course equivalence.

Credit is posted only after an official transcript is received showing successful completion of the course(s) and associated laboratories, if applicable. Official transcripts should be received in the semester following that in which the course(s) was taken. Students are reminded that a 3-credit course taken at another institution will transfer as 3 credits. Students are responsible for making up any credit deficiency which results from such transfer credit. The College does not grant transfer credit for courses in which the candidate has received grades lower than C or for courses which the candidate has taken on a Pass/Fail basis. Continuing engineering students who wish to complete coursework outside the United States must first meet with the Program Manager in the Office of External Programs at Study Abroad to obtain approval of the institution where they propose to complete coursework. Read the procedures to obtain transfer credit approval for courses taken at institutions outside the United States.

Boston University students may not satisfy program requirements through the transfer of credit earned in the summer offerings of other institutions located within the greater Boston area, unless the credit involved is for a required course, not offered through Boston University’s Summer Term, and prior approval has been obtained from both the responsible department and dean of the requesting student. “Greater Boston area” is defined as that region inside Route 128. A list of these schools is available through the Summer Term Office, 755 Commonwealth Avenue.

Graduate Transfer of Credit

Graduate-level courses from other accredited engineering programs must be approved for transfer credit (see below for specific limits). Approval requires the recommendation of the academic advisor and the department graduate associate chair or the division associate head, and the consent of the College’s Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs. Graduate courses cannot be transferred if they have been counted toward another degree program. Credit is transferred for courses with a grade of B or better, and such courses will not be counted in the graduation GPA. No transfer of credit for courses taken before the senior year of college will be accepted.

Transferable coursework completed under a semester-credit-hour system is awarded with an equal number of semester hours. A 3-credit course taken at another institution will transfer as 3 credits. Coursework completed under a quarter-credit-hour system is converted into semester hours by awarding two-thirds of the total number of quarter-credit hours. Although a transfer may fulfill a one-semester course requirement, any credit deficiency must be satisfied in order to meet graduation requirements.

Boston University courses not listed as department degree requirements or not listed in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Bulletin are also subject to the above approval process.

In either case, approval for courses taken after matriculation must be obtained before registration for such courses. All courses to be transferred must be taken for a letter grade (not Pass/Fail). Coursework taken on-line or at a foreign institution will not be accepted for transfer.  Once the transfer of credit is completed, the transfer is final.

Master’s Programs

No more than 8 semester transfer credits or the equivalent are permitted in the master’s program. Credits from Boston University courses described above are added to external transfer credits in arriving at this total.

Post-Bachelor’s PhD Program

No more than 8 semester transfer credits or the equivalent are permitted as part of the MS degree portion or structured course portion of the post-bachelor’s PhD degree program. Credits from Boston University courses described above are added to external transfer credits in arriving at this total.

Post-Master’s PhD Program

All credits to satisfy the 32-credit minimum must be taken at Boston University.
