Department of Film & Television

Undergraduate

Film & Television (BS)

For the Bachelor of Science in film & television, the department provides a comprehensive exploration of film, TV, and new media. The curriculum includes extensive offerings in production (directing, editing, cinematography, sound design, production design, etc.), film and television screenwriting, creative producing, entertainment management, and film and television studies, while ensuring that students receive a broad education across other fields through the BU Hub. Although certain departmental courses are required of all majors, students may tailor their curriculum to fit their interests and career goals.

The minor in film & television is open to all BU undergraduate students, including COM students, except for students in the Film & Television Department. Current COM students may minor in a department other than their declared department within COM. Please note there are no exceptions to minor requirements.

Graduate

The Department of Film & Television offers Master of Science (MS) programs in television & media ventures and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs in screenwriting and film & television studies. The programs and areas of study in the department are both academic and professional.

Graduate students are expected to examine, probe, and study the history and literature of their chosen field: its role in the communication process, its creative and technical development, its organization, its economic impact and development, and its aesthetic, social, and cultural developments and implications.

As part of its professional emphasis, the department provides an opportunity for practical work in both the classroom and the field.

Facilities

The College of Communication provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for instruction in studio and field production in both high-definition video and film and extensive digital post-production editing suites.

Professional Opportunities

There are frequent opportunities for contact with professionals from the many radio and television stations, media companies, and film and video production houses in or near the Boston area, as well as those around the world, including streaming networks and media conglomerates. The graduate internship program assists students in obtaining on-the-job experience with these professional organizations.

Both undergraduate and graduate students may participate in the Los Angeles Internship Programs to enhance their education and gain professional experience.

Expenses

While the College of Communication has all of the production and post-production equipment necessary to produce high-end work, students will be expected to supply their own expendables including external hard drives, flash media, film/video stock for field cameras and any processing fees that may be applicable. Other fieldwork expenses such as permits and utilities should also be expected.
