Transfer Credit

University Policy

College of General Studies Policy

It is generally expected that undergraduate students in the College of General Studies will complete the college requirements at Boston University.

Transfer students in the college will work with the associate dean to map externally awarded credits to CGS and degree requirements.

CGS course credit will be given for approved courses taken outside Boston University only if the grade earned is “C” or higher. Credit will be given but grades earned outside of Boston University are not computed in the student’s Boston University grade point average. Pass/Fail/Audited courses are not acceptable. The college will accept 3-credit courses, but the resulting deficiency in credit hours might call for further coursework toward the degree. As per Boston University policy, external courses applied to the BU degree will not fulfill the University’s general education (BU Hub) requirements.

Students must follow specific guidelines to get an external course approved for credit at Boston University. For more information on the external course evaluation process, please see the guidelines for how to transfer credit.
