Minor in Photojournalism

The minor in photojournalism is designed for students who want a general introduction to the concepts and practices of the professional photojournalist. This minor is open to College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, College of Engineering, School of Education, and School of Management students.

Prerequisites for entering the program are a minimum grade of B in CAS WR150 Writing and Research Seminar or CAS EN 220 Proseminar in Literature, and a grade of B in COM CO 201 Introduction to Communication Writing. The minor should be declared before the end of the second semester of the sophomore year to ensure sufficient time to complete the requirements.

Required Courses

The following four courses are required for the minor:

  • COM JO 305 Basic Photography
  • COM JO 307 Newswriting and Reporting I
  • COM JO 312 Photojournalism I
  • COM JO 357 History and Principles of Journalism

Three additional courses must be chosen from the following five:

  • COM JO 308 Newswriting and Reporting II
  • COM JO 513 Advanced Photojournalism
  • COM JO 515 Photo Editing
  • COM JO 522 Professional Portfolio
  • COM JO 537 Digital Fundamentals

A grade point average of 2.3 is required in all COM courses. No transfer credit may be used to fulfill the program’s eight-course residence requirement in the College of Communication. Students must register for COM CO 201 at the College of Communication Student Services office (COM Room 123), and for all other courses at the corresponding COM department.
