Minor in German

The minor in German is for students who seek to become proficient in the German language and acquire a good grasp of German cultural life, past and present. Each student’s six-course program of study includes two advanced language courses, two German literature courses taught in German, and two electives. This flexible structure affords great opportunities for incorporating courses taken abroad at the BU Study Abroad Program in Dresden.

Requirements

Six CAS LG courses numbered 250 or above are required. Unless otherwise noted, all required courses are 4 credit hours. These must include:

  • at least one course from the sequence CAS LG 303–304
  • at least one course from the sequence CAS LG 310–345
  • CAS LG 350
  • one course numbered CAS LG 400 or above

With advisor’s approval, students may include up to three equivalent transfer courses from other colleges, universities, or non-Boston University study abroad programs and must take a minimum of three courses (or a minimum of two, if they have four courses approved for credit toward the minor from Boston University’s program in Dresden) on the Charles River Campus. Internships taken through Boston University’s Study Abroad and Internship Programs may not be credited toward the minor in German. A grade of C or higher is required in all courses taken toward the minor.

Placement Examination

A placement test is required of all students whose most recent course in German was taken while in high school or at a college other than Boston University and who wish to continue their study of this language here. Information on testing dates and times is available in the department.
