Minor in Advertising

The minor in advertising is designed for students who want a general introduction to the concepts and practices of the advertising profession. This minor is restricted to College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, and College of Engineering students.

Prerequisites for entering the program are a minimum grade of B in CAS WR 150 Writing and Research Seminar, or CAS EN 220 Proseminar in Literature; and a grade of B in COM CO 201 Introduction to Communication Writing. The minor should be declared before the end of the second semester of the sophomore year to ensure sufficient time to complete the requirements.

Required Courses

The following four courses are required for the minor:

  • COM CM 317 Introduction to Advertising
  • COM CM 331 Writing for Communication
  • COM CM 417 Fundamentals of Creative Development (prereq: COM CM 317, CM 331)
  • COM CM 420 AdLab (2 credits)

Please Note: COM CM 420 must be taken twice for a total of four credits.

  • COM CM 405 New and Traditional Media Strategies (prereq: COM CM 317)
  • COM CM 416 Strategic Brand Solutions (prereq: COM CM 317)
  • COM CM 419 Advertising Management (prereq: COM CM 317)
  • SMG SM 299 Management as a System (6 credits, can be replaced by SMG SM 121/122 sequence)

Students may take elective courses from either category. Registration for all COM courses is on a space-available basis.

A grade point average of 2.3 is required in all COM courses. No transfer credit may be used to fulfill the program’s nine-course residence requirement in the College of Communication. Students must register for COM CO 201 at the College of Communication Student Services Office (COM Room 123), and for all other courses at the corresponding COM department.
