Department of Mathematics & Statistics

The department’s faculty and the courses they offer reflect a broad spectrum of areas in theory and application within the mathematical sciences. Students majoring in mathematics may select programs emphasizing pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics and probability. Aware of the importance of mathematics in a technological society and in keeping with the philosophy of liberal arts, the department encourages majors to pursue broad programs of study, building a sound foundation of core mathematical ability while learning about contemporary applications of their subject.

Students wishing to combine their interests in mathematics with those in computer science, economics, philosophy, or education may pursue joint majors in these areas. Similarly, students with an interest in statistics and computer science may pursue a joint major in those two areas. For those wishing to cap their undergraduate studies with advanced coursework at the master’s degree level, combined BA/MA programs are available in mathematics and statistics. The department also offers minor programs in mathematics, mathematical statistics, and statistical methods for students concentrating in other fields.

A student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), as well as the BU Data Science Association, are active groups enriching the department both socially and intellectually.
