Topics in Comparative Literature

CAS XL 470

May be taken for credit if topic is different. Five topics are offered Spring 2018. Section A1: Trauma, Memory, Literature East and West. Explores how we remember, how memory builds biographies and distinct cultural histories, and how various media represent trauma. Readings include theories of memory, literature of cataclysmic events in Asian and European cultures, of East Asia's history wars, and Holocaust literature. Also offered as CAS LC 470 A1, CAS LJ 451 B1, and CAS LK 470 A1. Section C1: The Cold War in East Asia. Explores cinematic and literary reflections on the Cold War in East Asia. Through Korean War blockbusters (JSA and Taegukgi), Japanese trauma narratives, and Chinese spy stories, students compare each society's memory of the war and popular culture. Also offered as CAS LC 470 B1, CAS LJ 451 C1, and CAS LK 470 C1. Section D1: Literary Modernism in Korea. How has literary modernism evolved in Korea? How have Korean writers engaged with local culture and politics through modernist aesthetics? How have they rewritten and reinterpreted global modernism? Training in close reading and interpretation; writing strategies. Taught in Korean. (Prerequisites: two 300-level Korean language courses, or consent of instructor.) Also offered as CAS LK 470 B1. Section E1: Queer Theory. Surveys major texts and arguments in queer theory from Butler's Gender Trouble to contemporary discussions of cisnormativity, homonationalism, affect, pinkwashing, crip theory, and queer-of-color critique. Explores different uses of queer theory in legal debates, literary analysis, and cultural criticism. Also offered as CAS WS 305 A1. Section F1: Holocaust and Genocide Through Film. An examination of documentaries and feature film on the Holocaust and other genocides. What are the political and cultural effects when genocide is represented through the medium of film? Should we rely on feature films to portray history? Also offered as CAS CI 390 G1.
