Topics in Spanish American Literature

Two topics are offered Fall 2017. Students may take one or both for credit. Section A1: Secrets in Latin American Literature and Culture. Readings in fiction and poetry with links to music, film and politics. Readings include Santa Evita by Tomas Eloy Martinez, El rufian moldavo by Edgardo Cozarinsky, poetry by Nicanor Parra, Borges and Juan Gelman and various films. Taught in Spanish. Section B1: The Sensorium of Modernity at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century. The impact of technologies of mechanical reproduction like photography, film, and the phonograph inaugurated new sensory environments that affected human consciousness and perception. This course studies Latin American literature in relation to this sensorium at the turn of the century. Taught in Spanish.
