Naturalism and its critics, rise of the I-novel, Taishô aestheticism, proletarian literature, postwar and post-recession crises of cultural identity, cell phone novels. Works by Natsume Sôseki, Hayashi Fumiko, Tanizaki Jun'ichirô, Oe Kenzaburo, and Tsushima Yûko.
