May be repeated for credit as topics change. Three topics are offered Fall 2016. Section A1: Twentieth- Century Architecture: Architecture and the Environment. Investigates how designers and planners have theorized architecture's relationship with the environment throughout the twentieth century. Analyzes key theoretical texts by architects and critics and links them to projects in Europe, United States, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Section B1: Images and Power Relations in Latin America. Through select case studies, an interrogation of the power of images constituting (as well as challenging) colonial, gender, racial, national, and modern identities. Section C1: Visual Cultures of the American City, 1800 - 1950. Examines the ways American artists interpreted settings, figures, and events of urban life between 1800 and 1950, a period that saw rapid urbanization, the dramatic growth of city populations, and intensive concentration of wealth and poverty in urban districts.
