Courses

Students enroll in one of the following courses and an internship course. Each course carries four Boston University credits. Students must enroll for a total of eight credits.

CAS PO 406 Introduction to Congressional Policymaking
A comprehensive analysis of the U.S. Congress and the way policy-making is conducted by this legislative body. This course combines theoretical and practical knowledge for a thorough assessment of the U.S. legislative and political process. 4 cr. Syllabus

CAS HI/PO/IR 356 American Governance: Foreign Affairs
An overview of twentieth-century American presidents and their influence on American foreign policy. The course covers important foreign policy concepts including isolationism, manifest destiny, and terrorism, and considers the changes in U.S. foreign policy over the last century. 4 cr. Syllabus


Internships
The Washington, DC Internship Program provides internship opportunities in almost every discipline and students from all fields are encouraged to apply. All students are interviewed by the program directors who arrange internship placements for students based on academic training, previous work experience, and intellectual objectives.

Past placements have included the White House, Congressional offices, the Department of Justice, the Heritage Foundation, the Sierra Club, the Smithsonian Institution, People for the American Way, public affairs offices, and advertising agencies.

All internship placements are arranged before arrival in Washington, DC

Faculty

Courses are taught by distinguished academics and professionals in the fields of government and history.

Walter S. Montano is a PhD candidate and Teaching Fellow at American University in Washington, DC His studies are focused on the American Presidency, specifically the Nixon and Ford administrations. He earned his B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1994. Mr. Montano has worked as an editor and writer in the Washington area for five years, both for the government and for different publications. He was the founding editor of Military Transition magazine, a bi-weekly armed forces publication from 2000-2001. He served as staff editor and speechwriter for the Office of the Independent Counsel from 1999-2000, co-authoring various reports to Congress concerning high-level presidential investigations during the Clinton Administration. He also was assistant editor for the American Enterprise magazine in Washington from 1997-1999. Mr. Montano’s research interests include U.S. foreign policy, military history, Latin America, and American Literature in the 20th century.
