Summer Term: May 27th to July 7th, 2009 The Dakar Senegalese Studies Program offers students the opportunity to spend six weeks living and studying in Dakar, Senegal’s vibrant, coastal capital. Dakar blends modern amenities with the rich cultures and traditions of diverse ethnic groups. Senegal, Africa’s westernmost country, has played a significant role in the politics, arts, and culture of West Africa. Coursework will introduce students to Senegalese culture through its literature, film, and performing arts. Students may also choose to study Wolof, one of the principal languages spoken in Senegal. Excursions complement the coursework and include Gorée Island and Saint-Louis, among others. The program stresses immersion through homestays, cultural events, and an on-site orientation which will introduce students to Senegalese cultural values. Students live with Senegalese families. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn eight Boston University credits.
