Spring Semester Only: Late January to early May The Guatemala Archaeology Program provides students with an unparalleled experience in Maya archeology, history and culture through intensive language study in the beautiful colonial town of Antigua, and through archaeological field work at San Bartolo, one of the premier archeological sites in the Maya world. During the first 4 weeks of the program students will study intensive Spanish in Antigua, Guatemala’s colonial capital. For the remaining 12 weeks of the semester students will live, study and work at the San Bartolo field camp and participate alongside the world’s foremost authorities in the ongoing investigation of this stunning Preclassic discovery. Recent investigations in the San Bartolo region of northern Guatemala have substantiated the view of Preclassic as the dynamic period when all aspects of later Maya civilization, including urbanization, hieroglyphic writing, and monumental architecture, were developed and refined. Students in this program will work at the cutting edge of Maya archaeology. Upon successful completion of the program students will receive 18 Boston University credits. The Guatemala Archeology Program will be offered in the spring semester of even numbered years only.
