This program is structured around an 8-day guided research trip when students travel to small-town coastal Australia. On this trip, students will gather a research portfolio for articles, and written pieces while also undertaking an online blog. Upon return to Sydney, class sessions and assignments will draw on students’ research gathered on the road trip. An internship placement in journalism will complement the academic course.
Students enroll in the course (JO 528) and an internship (JO 411).
COM JO 411 Internship in Journalism (4 credits)
Students intern in magazines, newspapers, web publications, and publishing houses, writing, copy-editing, fact-checking, interviewing, reporting, and reviewing.
COM JO 528: Travel Writing in Australia: Journalism and Non-Fiction (4 credits)
The course will focus on producing travel articles and factual pieces on travel and tourism developed around a sense of audience and purpose. Through the study of selected texts (including magazine and newspaper articles), and the drafting of written pieces, students will learn how to refine their writing style in order to integrate local voices, aspects of place, and other detailed research in an engaging narrative. Established travel writers and travel editors will be guest lecturers. There may be publication opportunities within the local, national, and overseas press, for student work of the highest merit. All Boston University Sydney programs are administered in coordination with our Boston and Sydney offices. In Boston, a program manager oversees the admissions and pre-departure procedures, and maintains contact with students prior to their arrival in Sydney. The Boston offfice also houses administrative personnel, who are responsible for everyday operations. In Sydney, the staff comprises a resident director and administrative, academic, and housing personnel.
