Dónal has a B.Sc. in Pharmacy from Trinity College, Dublin, a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and an M.A. focused on bioethics from Ashland Theological School in Ashland, Ohio. He returned to Ireland in 2003 where he is now Senior Lecturer in Ethics, Decision-Making & Evidence in the School of Nursing and Human Sciences at Dublin City University. He is particularly interested in ethical issues in healthcare and research during disasters, research ethics, nanotechnology, and personhood, the role of popular media in teaching ethics, and evidence-based practice. He is the co-editor of Disaster Bioethics: Normative Issues When Nothing is Normal, and has authored Nanoethics: Big Ethical Issues with Small Technology and Alternative Medicine: The Christian Handbook, along with numerous peer-reviewed articles. He leads Cochrane Ireland and an EU-funded project on disaster bioethics.
