Update: Earthquake in Japan
Friday, March 11th, 2011, 4:54 pm.
Aftershocks, some quite powerful, continue in Japan. Communications with Japan are still uncertain but we urge that students there try to be in contact with their families, curb any travel plans for the immediate future, and follow all instructions from program staff. Narita and some other airports in Japan are partially reopening but not accepting arrivals. Public transportation in Tokyo and other cities remains closed at this moment.
The most immediate risk of destructive tsunamis around the Pacific Rim, including the West Coast of the U.S. and South America, appears to have passed but we urge students to remain vigilant and follow local news, and the announcements of local authorities, carefully. Tsunami warnings and alerts are still posted in many places. We are advised that tsunamis can be prolonged events, and that the worst waves can sometimes follow a period of inactivity.
The tsunami advisory has been lifted for Australia and New Zealand.
