Deciding which browser to use
Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) comes pre-installed on all PCs, and you can always download the latest version for free from Microsoft.
Mozilla offers the highly-rated Firefox Web browser that you can also download for free. (We also recommend Mozilla's Thunderbird mail client. To use it, see our notes on configuring Thunderbird.)
There are also other browsers that you could consider using, including Opera and Safari. It can't hurt to have multiple browsers, so you should feel free to download and test them out. In fact, if you develop Web pages, it's a good idea to check the appearance of your pages in as many browsers as possible.
Web Login and general browser troubleshooting
Many aspects of the BU Web site require that you go through BU's Web Login page in order to authenticate. If you have problems with that process, or need help with any other browser troubleshooting please see our troubleshooting page for assistance.
Accessing e-mail with a Web browser
BU offers Web-based access to mail as described at www.bu.edu/webmail.
Alternatively, you can forward your BU e-mail to an outside account, using the page at www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/configure/forwarding/.
