Merry White

Merry White is Professor of Anthropology at Boston University and received her doctorate degree from Harvard University in the Department of Sociology. She returns to Japan often to continue research in contemporary social and cultural topics. Her publications in this area include Perfectly Japanese: Making Families in an Era of Upheaval; The Material Child: Coming of Age in Japan and America; The Japanese Educational Challenge and The Japanese Overseas. With Sylvan Barnet, she co-authoredComparing Cultures: Readings on Contemporary Japan for American Writers, and with Robert A. LeVine, she wrote Human Conditions. She writes frequently as a journalist in several fields, including culinary studies. She also works with Cambodian coffee farmers to help produce and sell their coffee beans, particularly in Japan, as a project in community development. She presently is engaged in research on urban social spaces and social change in Japan, particularly on the history of the cafe. Her teaching includes courses on Japanese society, on women in Asian, on food and culture and on the anthropology of travel and tourism.
